WHEN TO GO?

Nicaragua thrives on south swells, which typically occur from April to October, making this period ideal for surfing the bigger reefs and river mouths that litter the country. However, Nicaragua offers surfable waves year-round. During my time in Nicaragua, I can confidently say that there wasn’t a single week throughout the entire year when I couldn’t find waves to surf. That being said, the seasons offer different types of waves and conditions, so let me break it down for you.

WET SEASON OR DRY SEASON?

Nicaragua has a tropical climate with little seasonal variation in temperature and two distinct rainfall seasons: a wet season (May-October) and a dry season (November-April). During the wet season, don’t be alarmed by weather apps predicting daily rain. Much like other tropical places, there are brief spurts of rain that often don’t affect surf conditions. The wet season brings bigger swells, more clouds, and occasionally, afternoon onshore winds.

The dry season in Nicaragua is characterized by intense heat and clear skies. There were times when I didn’t see a cloud for weeks. While the swells during this time aren’t as large, many surf spots actually perform better with smaller swells. An added bonus of the dry season is the lack of crowds; it’s not uncommon to find yourself surfing alone in Nicaragua during this time of year.

If I had to choose the best time to surf in Nicaragua, I would probably pick either March or September. In March, the wind conditions are ideal. In my experience, March offers the best mix of medium-sized swells, uncrowded days, and all-day offshore winds. September is also fantastic for the same reasons, with the added potential for bigger swells.

WHERE TO SURF IN NICARAGUA?

Nicaragua can be broken down into three distinct surf regions: North, Central, and South. The most famous surf spots in Nicaragua are arguably Playa Colorados and Popoyo, both located in the southern region of the country. However, each region offers unique experiences and should not be overlooked. The northern region is known for its less crowded beaches and consistent waves, while the central region boasts a mix of well-known and hidden gems. Northern Nicaragua is a hidden gem for surfers looking to escape the crowds andhave themselves a true surf trip with no other distractions. This region is characterized by its rugged coastline, barreling beach breaks, and consistent surf. It’s perfect for those seeking a more off-the-beaten-path surf experience.

KEY SURF SPOTS

• Aposentillo: This is a fairly mellow and consistent wave, perfect for beginner and intermediate surfers who aren’t quite ready to take on the hollow peaks at The Boom. Advanced surfers can still have fun here, as the wave offers up enjoyable sections. Plus, Aposentillo is protected, so even on the biggest days, it won’t be maxed out
• The Boom: Aptly named, The Boom is famous for its powerful, hollow waves that attract advanced surfers for fun, consistant barreling peaks. This spot is not for the faint of heart, but if you’re up for the challenge, it delivers some of the best barrels in the country, much less crowded than Colorados in the south.
• Nahualapa: This is a great spot for beginner and intermediate surfers. The mellow waves and scenic backdrop make it an ideal place to improve your skills while enjoying the natural beauty of Northern Nicaragua.

MY TRAVEL TIP

While there are hostels available in Northern Nicaragua, the region is much less developed compared to the rest of the country. This underdevelopment is part of its charm, offering a more authentic and secluded experience. However, due to its limited infrastructure, I strongly recommend booking your accommodation ahead of time. This ensures you have a comfortable place to stay and can fully enjoy the uncrowded beaches and pristine surf spots Northern Nicaragua has to offer
